Your first safety cushion, one small step at a time
An emergency fund feels impossible until you break it into tiny, winnable milestones.
Common guidance suggests building an emergency fund worth a few months of essential expenses. When you're starting from zero, that number can feel so big that it's paralysing.
So don't start there. Start with a first milestone small enough to hit in a few weeks: enough to cover one surprise, like a repair or a vet bill. Then aim for one month of essentials, then two.
Keep the cushion somewhere separate from your everyday account so it doesn't quietly get spent. It's there for emergencies, not for Tuesdays.
- Work out your essential monthly costs, roughly, on one page.
- Set a small first milestone you could reach in a month.
- Open or label a separate place for it, away from daily spending.
This is general information, not financial advice. Your needs depend on your circumstances.
