The "future you" jar: saving that doesn't feel like sacrifice

Give your savings a name and a face, and they become much easier to keep.

"Save more" is an abstract instruction, and abstract goals are easy to ignore. "A week in Portugal next spring" is concrete, and concrete goals pull you forward.

That's the idea behind the 'future you' jar, whether it's a real jar or a separate savings account with a nickname. You name the goal, choose a small amount and make it automatic, so it happens before you can talk yourself out of it.

Then celebrate the milestones: 10%, 25%, halfway. Progress you can see is motivating, and it turns saving from sacrifice into anticipation.

Try this week
  1. Name one specific thing 'future you' would thank you for.
  2. Set up a small, automatic transfer on payday, even a very small one.
  3. Put a picture of the goal somewhere you'll see it daily.

This is general information, not financial advice. For decisions about your own situation, consider speaking to a qualified adviser.
