Your first solo trip: a gentle how-to

Nervous about travelling alone? Start close, start short and plan a soft landing.

TLTessa Lindgren · 7 min read

The first solo trip is often the hardest one to book. The trick is to lower the stakes: pick somewhere relatively easy to navigate and stay for just two or three nights.

Plan a 'soft landing' for arrival: book the first night's accommodation in advance, know exactly how you'll get there, and have a simple dinner plan. Arriving tired and lost is what makes solo travel feel scary.

After that, give yourself permission to go slowly. Eat at the bar, join a walking tour, sit in a park. Being alone isn't the same as being lonely.

Try this week
  1. Choose a destination within a few hours of home.
  2. Book the first night and plan the route from the station.
  3. Share your itinerary with someone you trust.
